This week I was privileged to attend a celebration event with a group of individuals not directly involved with training management software, although on the receiving end of support and training as part of the Dolphins’ Den project.
What is Dolphins’ Den?
Dolphins’ Den is the brain child of Andrew Bright, Learning and Development Project Partner and Service Quality Director at Thera Trust. The project aims to empower individuals with a learning disability to set up their own business or community project. The project is nationwide, but we’ve been involved in the Lancashire pilot which started earlier this year. The Thera Trust Group charity support adults with a learning disability in their own
home, at work, in their local community and for short breaks.
Who is involved?
The project brought together individuals from
different business backgrounds to mentor and help develop business ideas. In addition to the one to one mentoring sessions, other trainers gave their time to offer workshops in business planning and marketing. Some fabulous small business ideas came out of these sessions with participants eager to put their ideas into action. Some of my favourites were:- Producing and marketing a great selection of handmade unique shopping bags
- Creating some great twists on handmade jewellery
- Setting up a vegetable plot with the aim to sell to the local community
- ‘Bus Buddies’ supporting other young adults to use public transport with confidence
- Offering a dog walking service
- Developing DJ skills
The celebration event gave all the participants the opportunity to shine and enjoy a moment of success. I’m sure that I can speak on behalf of all the mentors to say that it was great to use our business skills to help others, but we also learned a lot along the way.
