Industry Trend: Increasing Demand For Training In UK Rail

When was the last time you boarded a train? This morning? Last week? Maybe you hardly ever use the National Rail Service. According to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) approximately 1.6 billion train journeys have been recorded in the last 12 months. This equates to just under half a million passengers a day! Despite our frequent use of the railway, many of us rarely consider the people and processes behind this industry who support the service on a day-to-day basis.

If you are a regular passenger on the trains, you might have noticed some information posted around the station about Rail Week 2016. This industry-wide initiative is being led by Young Rail Professionals Limited, a non-profit organisation supporting careers and opportunities in the railway industry. The event is being supported by a number of establishments such as Network Rail and Transport for London.

Across the week there are a number of events which intend to encourage young professionals to consider careers in this growing industry. Currently, over 200K jobs are supported by this market however there is a huge skills-shortage in rail related industries. As a result, there is growing demand for railway engineering skills and training courses across the UK as the demand for railway services increases. Rail Week not only promotes opportunities for young professionals in the industry, but also build awareness surrounding the people and processes who support the smooth running of the railway every day.

With the increasing demand for rail transport, industry leaders are looking at ways to generate interest in careers in this sector. This means focusing on the next generation of engineers and encouraging them to take advantage of the vast opportunities in this area. It also means increasing the availability of training courses, to ensure that individuals have the skills and knowledge necessary to cope with the increasing demand for rail services. As the number of training courses increases, businesses need to be able to cope with the added administration involved with managing and scheduling trainers, resources and equipment.

Being a training management software house we have recently seen an increase in companies in the rail industry acquiring software to manage their training including some of our newer clients, Fast Line Training and Real Skills. Combined, these companies run thousands of training courses each year that would be almost impossible to manage manually. Training offered cover topics such as Engineering, First Aid and Railway Safety which are key skills required to support the growth of the industry and ensure high levels of quality and safety nationally. Training courses, equipment and engineering works all tie in together to produce a smooth running of the railway and ensure minimal disruption to passengers across the UK.

Our training administration system assists these business in managing their courses and training calendars to reduce costs and risks of human error. Our key mission is to work with training providers to simplify the administration and management processes involved with running a large number of training courses. This means that business can reduce their costs, save time and focus on improving their training courses and business development. This is absolutely essential in a growing industry such as the railway sector.

To ensure a reliable standard of service for all passengers, employee training has to be managed consistently to reduce disruption, inefficiencies or skill gaps. Aside from rail, we also work with training organisations across a wide range of markets from the Education sector to Oil and Gas industries. All of these companies benefit from our software by automating aspects of their administration processes and improving course delivery. Key benefits of a training management system include:

  • Reduced costs: With every function and data in one place you can easily automate and streamline your processes reducing error.
  • Improved business visibility: Build reports to analyse profit and loss statements alongside course viability.
  • Increased sales: Online course booking can be integrated into your existing website to allow course delegates to book ontos courses at ease.
  • Automated communications: Simplify the administration of course notifications such as joining instructions, booking confirmations and evaluation forms.
