National Minimum Data Set - Social Care
The NMDS-SC is a reality NOW!
Skills for Care, who were charged with the onerous task of creating a process that
would profile and track England’s entire social care workforce, have recently announced
that they are working towards making it a mandatory requirement for employers to
submit in-depth details of their organisation, and of everyone working in that organisation.

"The Board will discuss and agree a transitional plan to move towards compulsory
submission for 2007/2008 at their Members’ Autumn Seminar meeting in November."
Key Messages from the Skills for Care Board Meeting – 24th May 2006
The information on an estimated 1.5 million care workers will be used by policy
makers and strategists at National and Local level to identify the personnel requirements
of the industry.

AccessPlanit supplied Skills for Care with examples
of NMDS-SC outputs from Accessplan which have now been fully tested to ensure that
they conform which their requirements. Christine Eborall, Skills for Care, Programme
Head - Workforce Intelligence has stated that "Accessplan is the first and only
3rd party software package that has been tested by Skills for Care head office staff
to conform with the NMDS-SC Excel spreadsheet requirements" (Jan 07)
"
The NMDS-SC will:
- Allow benchmarking of services with other organisations.
- Identify staff skills, needs and achievements.
- Enable managers to create a staff development and training plan that meets the
needs of the organisation and which reflects the National Minimum Standards.
- Facilitate effective workforce planning for both the current and future social
care workforce.
- Identify skill shortages
- Attract resources to support the social care skills agenda.
- Enable planners and funders to target areas of investment when considering economic
and educational capacity issues."

The NMDS-SC will replace demands from the many separate organisations currently
demanding information on care providers staffing.
Care providers and others within social care will applaud only having to provide
this information to one organisation but may wince at the annual slog of completing
a very comprehensive set of documents or a spreadsheet.
AccessPlanit have been tracking the development
of the NMDS-SC for several years now and have developed an online solution for
three distinct categories of social care stakeholder. Individual Care Provider Organisations,
Multi-Branch or Corporate Organisations and Employer Led Partnerships or other groups
formed to source funding for training, sharing resources, such as Skills for Care
Partnerships.
Whilst no decision or announcement has yet been made it is planned that this year
2006/07 Skills for Care are linking the dissemination of funding for training to
the completion of the NMDS-SC making it imperative that care provider employer organisations
understand the urgency to consider cost effective solutions to collecting, collating
and submitting data. AccessPlanit have the solution
available now.
